I’ve seen these in other houses, but I never had one in my old house. I always wondered what the heck they were for and what you would put there. What am I talking about you ask? Well, I am talking about a nook. A basement nook that is usually at the bottom of the stairs, to the right or left and really seems to hold no purpose. Now, if there is a purpose and you know what that purpose is, please fill me in! In the meantime, I will show you what I did with my basement nook.
When I first looked at this house, I knew it was going to be ours. I looked at SO MANY houses with our relator and took so many pictures. I work evenings, so it was convenient for me to look at houses during the day, take pictures and talk to my husband about them so we could decide if it was something we should look at a second time together. There were no houses that I called him and said, you need to see this one! Until THIS ONE! I walked in and I just knew it was ours! Funny things is, I looked at this one online a few times and never wanted to look at it because I thought it was a split level and I didn’t want a split level again! The price dropped, and our relator suggested in with five others that we had booked to look at that day, it was our first stop. We walked through the house and I fell in love, not with just the house but the land also. We toured the house and got to the basement and I saw the nook. I was dreading this nook after that, wondering what in world I was going to do with it. But I loved the rest of the house and a little nook wasn’t a deterrent.
Looking for Ideas
We left the house, looked at the other five that day and when my husband got off work, we looked again. We put an offer on the house that night and my search for ideas for this nook started. I searched Pinterest for ideas and found some good ones. A coffee bar, we LOVE coffee, however it’s not in an area that we would utilize it for coffee. A reading nook, same thing, I love to read however I knew I wouldn’t use it. A desk for an office or homework area, but we already were thinking we would be using one of the bedrooms for an office, plus the basement had a built-in desk already. Then it came to me, a bar area! We love craft beer and had a small area in our old house set up for a small bar but nothing I loved. I just knew that this is what we would do with our nook. I was so excited about this when we moved in that it was the first area I really did anything with.
Setting up the Bar
First of all, the area doesn’t have running water, so when I say a bar, it’s more like a mini fridge and some beer paraphernalia. We love it though! I put up our old produce counter that we have (which I will be refinishing soon) and used at our old house for this same thing. The difference was, at our old house I didn’t decorate around it, we just had the mini fridge there and that was all. This time, I got to decorate!
Decorating the Bar
Our last name is Schmidt, so we have some Schmidt Beer items that I hung up. My brother in law used to work at a printing shop and they had made posters for a local brewery and he had given us that he got to keep, and we had a few other random things. One of those things were four posters that we had got one of the years we went to Sturgis. They were all Miller High Life posters that were all drawn by different artists for different brands that collaborated with Miller High Life. I had forgotten all about these posters until we were unpacking. They were one of those things that we packed away in hopes to have an awesome place to put them someday, but in the meanwhile we wanted them to stay safe. For these, and our smaller local brewery posters, we bought poster frames to display them nicely. Our mini beer fridge, we also got in Sturgis. My husband won it from Craftsman which was so cool!
The Finished Look
We absolutely love how our little bar nook turned out! We have plans to put up some shelves to display our growlers and unique bottles along with our Schimdt neon light and an awesome Schmidt name plaque that a friend had made for us. Until those things get displayed, this is it!
If you have ideas or what to show me what you have done with your little basement nook, please let me know!
